Chapter 7
âMike? Are you there, over? Mike? Are you there, over?â Barney radioed. âNo one is answering at the station,â he said as he slammed the radio against the dashboard.
Lexis looked at him, a little concerned. âI donât think slamming the radio is going to help matters. Have you tried any other frequencies? Have you tried your phone?â
With a sigh he snapped, âYes, Iâve tried other frequencies. Yes, Iâve tried my phone. Any other questions?â Lexisâ face crumpled and she looked away from him. Barney sighed and said, âIâm sorry. My phone was working earlier when I called you and Trevor but now it isnât. Too many people trying to dial at the same time, I guess. When we started getting reports about what was going on, I was at the station. I was getting ready to leave and then we got word that our officers were dying in the streets. Reports about these things came flooding in. It was all too hard to believe. Officers were dying right and left. They were saying that the monsters were heading towards your neighborhood. I knew Trevor was going to your place, and I couldnât stand the thought of my best friend dying. I havenât heard anything over the radio since then.â He paused. âNone of us have parents in our lives anymore. We are all weâve got left.â
âYouâre right, Barney.â Lexis looked at Stephan in the back seat and smiled. He returned her smile. She smiled at Trevor, but he didnât notice her looking at him. He was staring out the window deep in thought.
He argued silently with himself. âItâs all my fault. Milo is dead because of me. Julia is dead because of me. Had I not tried to win back a woman who didnât want to get won over, maybe Milo would still be alive. Had I just left Stephan in the hands of his mother, maybe sheâd still be alive. Maybe I wouldnât have uncovered this ugly truth. Maybe Lexis shouldâve let Milo kill me. Maybe I should have killed Julia. She would have suffered less pain than she did.â
Looking over at what used to be his pride and joy, Trevor felt the deep cut of betrayal go through him like an assassinâs samurai sword. He didnât feel bad for trying to win Lexis back. He loved her. Had never stopped loving her. The timing just wasnât right. And Julia shouldâve died the most painful death possible after all of the things that sheâd put him through. Sheâd wasted years of his life. If sheâd wanted to tell the truth, she shouldâve just told the truth. âHey Trevor, I fucked the person you hate most in the world to get pregnant and trap you under false pretenses.â She knew it would hurt double to find out Stephan was Scottieâs son. He would never forgive her.
Trevor started to quietly cry. He still didnât know if it was right to try to save Lexis instead of Stephen. He loved her and would have given anything for her to want to give their relationship another try.
